Opulent and evergreen – the Banarasi saree is one of India’s finest textile traditions. At Angadi Silks, our handcrafted Banarasi collection celebrates and takes forward this rich legacy.
A ravaging famine, in the 17th century, is said to have driven artisans from Gujarat to the holy town of Banaras (now Varanasi). Already established as a weaving hub, Banaras embraced these artisans who weaved strands of silk and threads of zari together. In the following centuries, brocade patterns, inspired by the Mughal aesthetic, took over and continues to be a favourite.
In the 21st century, the elegant floral motifs, painstaking mina and jal work, and the intricate metallic flourishes produced by the craftsmen at Angadi Silks enthrall generations of women, especially, brides. Angadi Silks’ collection also includes other varieties of the Banarasi, including, organzas, crepes, and georgettes.
