Dhakai Jamdani

The traditional art of weaving Jamdani has been declared by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Under British colonialism, the Bengali Jamdani and Muslin industries rapidly declined due to colonial import policies favouring industrially manufactured textiles. In more recent years, the production of Jamdani has witnessed a revival in Bangladesh. With Jamdani saris becoming one of the most prestigious luxury fabrics of South Asia and have more recently come to be accorded with the UNESCO heritage status.
